The available research carrels, which are located on the 3rd through 5th floors in the library, are intended to support faculty research and graduate student research for theses or final projects.
All IU South Bend faculty, including lecturers, instructors, as well as visiting faculty and scholars, and graduate students who are working on a thesis or final project requiring research are eligible to apply for research carrels.
Carrels are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis for one semester at a time (fall, spring and summer). A waiting list of applicants is maintained.
Carrel requests may be made via the Research Carrel Reservation Form.
Each carrel comes with a unique lock. After assignment of a carrel, you will need to arrange to pick up the key from the library's Circulation desk. The key will be checked out to your library account for the semester. Seven days before the reservation period is over, we will send you a courtesy notice of the upcoming due ate. You must return the carrel key to the library's Circulation desk. To extend your use of the carrel, please re-apply for the carrel using the Research Carrel Reservation Form.
You are responsible for this key throughout the semester. If lost, you must notify Library Administration immediately. Library Administration will then notify Facilities Management so that a replacement key can be made. You will receive notification when the new key is ready for pickup. You will be assessed a $30 replacement fee for the key through your library account.
Fill out the Research Carrel Reservation Form to renew a carrel.
PLEASE KEEP YOUR CARREL LOCKED WHEN NOT IN USE. All library materials left in the carrels overnight must first be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Items not checked out will be removed and re-shelved. Furniture may not be moved in or out of the carrels.
Food and beverage containers must be removed or disposed of before you leave. There is a trash can in each carrel, and recycling containers are located throughout the library. If disposing of food items (including containers), please place the trash can outside of your carrel before leaving for the day, as trash is only removed from offices and common library areas a few times a week.
The library and university are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Please note that library, custodial, campus police, and other university staff may enter carrels as necessary for the performance of their job duties. At the discretion of the library, a carrel may be reassigned if the currently assigned faculty member or graduate student uses the carrel in violation of library or university policy.
If you have any questions about the policy or carrel reservations, please email Susan Thomas, Dean of Library Services, at suethoma@iu.edu or call (574) 520-5500.
