Purpose of Policy
The collection development policy for Music guides the development and management of the IU South Bend Libraries’ music collections. The music collection supports the Music Department’s curriculum as well as courses in Theater & Dance, New Media, and other fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Education, and Area Studies.
Program Description
The Music program offers undergraduate degrees in Music and Music Education, along with a graduate Master of Music. Also offered are Performer and Artist diplomas, special curricula for students in performance who do not wish to pursue an academic degree.
All undergraduate music students must participate and attend major ensembles. Ensemble groups are diverse in scope, ranging from the flute ensemble and gospel choir to the IUSB Philharmonic and Jazz Combos. Graduate students are required to take Contemporary Music and Music Bibliography.
Courses
Music theory, literature and history, contemporary music; ethnic and pop music of the world; composition; sight reading; counterpoint; computer music; electronic music; arranging; piano pedagogy and accompanying; choral, orchestral, and voice performance; chamber music or small ensemble; techniques for conducting; singing for actors; diction; and music education.
