Indiana University South Bend has taught a one-credit Information Literacy course since 1996. The online version of the course was initially offered in 2003. As part of our new General Education curriculum, the one-credit Introduction to Information Literacy course has been required since the fall of 2005. Librarians teach approximately 25 sections of the course a year.

The online course consists of web-based modules that are accessed from within our course management system. The course management system itself includes the syllabus, assignments, email, discussion lists, and a gradebook.

Here is a screen shot of the welcome page for our online course modules:

The modules consist of text, graphics, animation, and some screenshots and voiceovers. In order to make the modules more dynamic, we wanted to add video and tutorial features for certain parts of each module; those concepts that may need reinforcement or are especially difficult to understand in an online course.

We received an internal campus grant in January 2007 to develop five short videos:
Boolean Operators
Finding a Book
Periodicals
Government Publications
Reference sources and assistance

We are remodeling our reference area into an Information Commons, and our reference sources are temporarily stored in the Government Publications area, so we've tabled those two videos for now.

We started with the Boolean Operators and Finding a Book videos. Our next production will be the Periodicals video.
