Position reports to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Alfred Guillaume
I. Primary responsibilities.
The Dean of Library and Media Services overall responsibility is to ensure that the Schurz Library, the Educational Resource Commons, and Instructional Media Services meets the mission of providing access to information to support the scholarly and teaching pursuits of IUSB. Specifically, the Dean:

Establishes and evaluates policies and procedures to ensure high quality services.

Ensures that the organizational structure of the library facilitates planning, communication, and effective use of resources.

Hires and develops personnel necessary to ensure and maintain quality library services and collections.
- Coordinates all personnel searches within the Library and Media Services, ensuring that diversity goals are pursued diligently and campus procedures are followed.
- Establishes and maintains a cooperative, collegial work climate among all staff and between all staff and library users.
- Supervises, directs, and instructs library faculty and staff on their responsibilities to their work.
- Counsels, advises, and supports library faculty and staff on career goals and growth within the library profession.
- Provides written evaluations of librarians and staff as outlined by campus and IU system policies.
- Establishes and implements an equitable approach to compensation for librarians, staff, and student employees as allowed by campus policies.
- Recommends to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and/or Director of Human Resources and Affirmative Action Officer all personnel actions for librarians and full time staff. (e.g., appointments, reappointments, promotion, tenure, sabbatical leaves, involuntary dismissal.)
- Requests new positions with justifications to appropriate committees and/or administrators.

Builds and maintains information resources reflective of the academic curriculum and research of the IUSB community. Works to attain materials for the Library from various sources, either through grants and donations of funds for library purchase or through donations of library materials.

Develops, justifies, and administers the Library budget.

Promotes awareness of the vital role of the Library and Media Services in the fulfillment of the campus mission to the administration, the campus, and to the communities served by IUSB.

Ensures that the physical facilities and equipment are maintained to optimize access to information and services in an academic environment conducive to study and research.
- Follows ADA, OSHA, and other applicable and required regulatory rules/laws.
- Provides an attractive, comfortable, healthful, and state-of-the-art work environment for library faculty and staff as well as for library users.
- Works cooperatively with other departments (e.g. Facilities Management and Information Technologies) to ensure optimal equipment and connections.
- Plans for future space and facility requirements.

Represents the Library and Media Services on appropriate academic, technological, and administrative committees, councils, and special task forces on the campus and university level.

Participates with the IU Dean of Libraries and library deans/directors on other IU campuses to ensure system-wide coordination of library services, especially the online union catalog and other electronic services.

Serves as ex-officio of the Academic Senate=s Library Affairs Committee and to assist the committee in its understanding library issues.

Determines needs of the Library=s clientele within the context of the changing academic environment.

Identifies and pursues sources of support (granting agencies, donors, volunteers) for library operations, working with other departments (e.g., Development Office), as appropriate.

Keeps abreast of national developments in the field of library and information science to ensure that the IUSB Library and Media Services will be able to take advantage of various advances in the field.

Serves as campus resource for copyright questions and works with University Counsel as needed.

Assists academic departments/divisions in the accreditation process.

Ensures that the Library provides appropriate services to the community and complements local information resources.

Prepares all required reports of the Library for the campus administration and the IU Libraries system.
II. Qualifications.
Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited program
Minimum eight to ten years previous academic library experience with at least 5 years in administration
Understanding of current technological applications in libraries and media services
Experience with budget development, justification, and administration
Experience in personnel management
Good written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work well with faculty, students, staff, and general public
Must be able to meet tenure requirements
